Most see Labor Day as a three-day weekend but forget the reasons why it became a holiday. Although it’s the unofficial signal of the end of summer, on this day, we should consider the freedoms we have to select ways to improve ourselves and create opportunities.

Most of us take that for granted because we have not lived in countries where we are not allowed that freedom.

The new generation certainly has reasons to want change. After all, salaries have not kept up with the cost of living, housing is too expensive, and gas prices are through the roof. It may seem that those coming into the workforce face permanent roadblocks to simply living a life.

These concerns are real but not unprecedented. After all, other generations have survived world wars, the Great Depression, severe recessions, attacks on our homeland, epidemics, and other disasters that paralyzed our communities with fear and foreboding.

Because of the freedoms we enjoy, each of us has the ability not just to survive, but to thrive and bring our country to the epitome of its potential.

They went back to work, started new businesses, created new industries, and, through innovation, developed a higher standard of living.
That same determination is still available to us.
